This Weekend

Posted by Derek Haley at Oct 26, 2008 4:26PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

You guys continue to do a great job!

In the Princeton game – despite the rain and wind – you all kept fighting back to help us preserve a tie. And in the Somerset Hills game, we were able to hold-off a well trained team with our starting forwards icing injuries on the sideline. We are all very proud of you.

In case you haven’t noticed, teams bring their best game when they play the Destroyers; they know you all are good, so they try to match your speed, skill, and teamwork with their own intensity – which sometimes means a more physical game, more pushing, shoving, etc. Don’t worry about what other kids do or say to you; just play your game – like Nike says, “Just Do It!”

You guys played very good this weekend. The passing was good, the teamwork was good, and we were able to recover when we made mistakes. We’re really proud of you all.

Keep up the good work.

Busy Weekend Coming Up

Posted by Derek Haley at Oct 12, 2008 1:39PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

We played hard on Sunday, but we need to work on playing smarter. One of the keys about being a good team is relying on your teammates to do their job. If everyone does what they are responsible to do, we will be successful.

Key learning from the game – don’t wait for the ball to come to you; go get the ball. Waiting for things to happen keeps you on the defensive; goals are scored when players are on the offensive. Let’s continue to play smart and aggressively, and let’s keep getting better.

Next weekend North Plainfield Recreation will host Soccer Day, and we’ll be visited by players from the New Jersey Ironmen. We also have games on Saturday and Sunday. Make sure you all have plenty of rest during the week, and let’s get back in the win column.

Make sure all your school work is done correctly and on time.

Este fin de semana del juego

Posted by Derek Haley at Sep 22, 2008 8:02AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

This Weekend of Play

Posted by Derek Haley at Sep 22, 2008 8:00AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Unfortunately, not all our paperwork was in order this past weekend, so we were not able to play the scheduled games. We are correcting the problem, and expect to be ready to play on Sunday.

Thank you to all the parents that helped cutting the grass, lining the field, setting up the goals, and taking down the goals. We need everyone to help do something, please.

We have to a better job showing our kids what good sportsmanship is; that includes being supportive of them – whether they win or lose. I know we all hate losing, but if the kids think they are disappointing you, their parents, they will eventually stop playing soccer. At this age, it is more important to support the effort, rather than result.

Set a good example. Give the kids a tunnel to run through at the end of the game – win or lose – because it means more to them then you can imagine. If you are like me, you bleed the colors of your favorite team – whether its Columbia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, United States, or any other team – if they are good or bad, win or lose, they are still your team. Make sure you give your kids at least that same respect and support.
